A “workation” study reveals the benefits of the trendy smart working style in Sweden

Disconnecting from the usual work environment is good. Just as it is good to pack your work every now and then and find a corner close to nature where you can carry out your work duties without compromising too much internet connectivity or the work itself.

According to a Swedish study, 22% of the participants showed more calm, harmony and tranquility by working in contact with nature, reducing at the same time episodes of stress and depression.

The study was conducted by the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, a leading medical university. A group of people were monitored for a week while working in the usual home environment and then for another week in a lodging close to nature just outside Stockholm.
Mental health and well-being increased by 22%, while cases of stress and depression fell by 48%.
Sleep quality also improved. The speed of falling asleep of the group of workers in the “natural” environment increased by 51%, thereby reducing the number of nocturnal awakenings.

According to Mare Löhmus Sundström, an associate professor at the Karolinska Institutet, these studies still demonstrate what positive impact nature can have on man and also on his working life. Sweden has many accommodations and workplaces scattered around the country that can offer contact with nature and adapt to a “workation” lifestyle.

This is the reason why the so-called business trips have been encouraged that allow escapes into nature that are also accessible in urban areas. The benefits for people could be many.

Study data

The study was conducted in early June 2021. The participants, aged between 20 and 35, all had jobs that allowed them to work remotely in a home / studio in contact with nature. A combination of quantitative methods was used to investigate the participant’s health, sleep patterns, and physical activity. Study participants wore specific equipment that recorded their movements every 15 seconds and also collected sleep parameters. Participants completed self-assessment tests and self-measured blood pressure morning and evening.
